Please join us to talk and think about Israel and Palestine.  We will first share a meal together starting at 7:00, please bring a dish if you are able. A vegetarian entree will be served at the house as well.

Then Dr. Yakir Englander will share his experiences and perspective living in Israel, as well as his peace building work with young people through Kids4Peace International.

Afterwards we will all get a chance to ask questions and share our own perspectives and experiences.  Also we will discuss the U.S. role in the conflict and how it affects faith communities here.

Dr. Yakir Englander is a visiting professor at Northwestern University and a Fulbright Scholar. He focused on Jewish Theology and Philosophy and Gender Studies. He grew up in an Ultra-Orthodox Hasidic home in Israel. He studied in Yeshivas for years and then served in the army for 3 years.  He is also currently the vice president of Kids4Peace International and served as the director of the program in Israel and Palestine for 6 years.

Junot Diaz has been a hot topic in the lives of a few Lelanders (and we know we’re not the only ones). Accordingly, a book discussion is certainly in order. You should join us!

Pick up a copy of his second masterpiece – which, by the way earned him a Pulitzer – and join us next month to share your thoughts.

Junot Díaz was born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New Jersey. He is the author of the critically acclaimed Drown; The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, which won the 2008 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award; and This Is How You Lose Her, a New York Times bestseller and National Book Award finalist. He is the recipient of a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, PEN/Malamud Award, Dayton Literary Peace Prize, Guggenheim Fellowship, and PEN/O. Henry Award. A graduate of Rutgers College, Díaz is currently the fiction editor at Boston Review and the Rudge and Nancy Allen Professor of Writing at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The incoming and outgoing membership coordinators recently attended the Facing Race conference in Baltimore. The organizers of the conference have also produced a film called Cracking the Codes: The System of Racial Inequity, which Leland house will be screening the night of the potluck.

Dinner starts at 6:30pm. The movie starts at 7:30, followed by a discussion afterwards. We are also still looking for members, so prospectives are encouraged to stop by.
